Career restart

Hello AT,

I was working in manual testing from 2010 to 2014 and now a stay at home mom. I want to restart my career, I know the situation is not the same as before since I have a career break. I am ready to work as a freelancer, so need some guidance to restart my career. Whether to learn any tool or to do some kind of online course.

I would be grateful for your suggestions.

Thanks,

Sony

    Hi Sony,

Thanks for your question. Not sure why you greeted me as “AT” :D, but anyway, here’s my answer:

It looks like you make a good career path to restart your career as freelancer. I say that because it would be more challenging for you if you decided to follow full-time job after a not so short break (3 years). I see your need to upgrade yourself, but it’s hard to suggest because I don’t know what you have or what your level is. However, to be honest, I don’t see any big changes in the testing in the industry in last 3 years, so you don’t have to worry much about that. Anway, if you would like to see in details, take a look at this report: http://qablog.practitest.com/state-of-testing/ , it will tell you the overall state of testing.

Also, if you want to become freelancer, you may hear about uTest. When joining uTest, you can join freelance testing project and get paid for bugs you find or test cases you run. I see some people going full-time with uTest and make good money. I write a guide about it here: https://asktester.com/freelance-tester-on-utest-an-utest-review/

For the online course, again, I don’t know what you know or what you need, so I can’t recommend any course specifically. However, I recommend you take a look at courses on Udemy. Why? It’s dirt cheap. Most of the courses there are free or priced at the cost of 1-2 cup of coffee (check it out: https://www.udemy.com/ )

Another advice I can give you is that if you don’t want to stick with testing, you may try other ideas like freelance writer (if you can write). You can research more about that on the internet.

I wish you luck and don’t hesitate to ping me how your freelance journey is going.

    -Thanh
